"The Lost" (2006)

"Night of the Demons" (2009)

I have a confession, y'all: I had a ginormous crush on Edward Furlong back in his T2 days.  Unfortunately, his career is leading him down the path of B-level horror flicks-- although, I must admit, Night of the Demons is actually a fun little ride.  A bunch of rowdy teenager/young adults (all of who strangely resemble porn stars) have a wild Halloween party in an old mansion.  Accidentally, they release a slew of evil demons who kill them off one by one in order to take over the world.

P.S. This movie is actually a remake of the 1988 film of the same name.  They only difference is that the original flick took place in an abandoned mortuary instead of a cool mansion.

P.S.S. Monica Keena and Edward Furlong actually started dating after being in this movie together.  And yes, I was slightly jealous.... just kidding!

"Mum & Dad" (2008)

Sometimes, folks, the British just do it better-- especially when it comes to horror films.  Mum & Dad is a terrific indie movie about a girl who moves to England and finds herself a captive in someone's basement.  Worst of all, they have a sick sense of reality and force her to be a member of their sick, twisted, demented (have I mentioned how scary they are?) "family".  This movie truly frightens me and gives me nightmares-- if you have a weak stomach, you will soon know why.

P.S. This is the first film of director Steven Sheil.  Here's to hoping that he makes more good flicks in the future.

"Drive Thru" (2007)

I'm honestly not sure which is scarier: a demonic killer clown or the greasy fast food it tries to sell.  While I think I'd fear the crappy food more, Drive Thru is a movie that gets its scare factor from Horny, an appropriately named clown from fast food joint Hella Burger.  When he's not killing bratty Orange County teens, he is stalking Mackenzie, a punk rock teenager played by Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester.  While it's definitely not an Oscar-worthy flick, Drive Thru is campy, fun, and has Penn Badgley-- it could be worse.

P.S. Going with the fast food theme, Super Size Me director Morgan Spurlock makes a cameo appearance as a manager of Hella Burger.  Can we say ironic?

P.S.S. The town where all this carnage is occurring is called "Blanca Carne."  It means "white meat" in Spanish.

"The Devil's Rejects" (2005)

Today's Horror du Jour comes courtesy from Happy and Wrong, my other blog dedicated to life's everyday moments (and lots of fashion... and coupons).  Check out The Devil's Rejects, an underrated film directed by Rob Zombie.  When the murderous Firefly family goes on the run from the cops, they discover that they are not the only savages in the world.

"Jennifer's Body" (2009)

While Jennifer's Body got lukewarm reviews at best, I happen to be a pretty big fan of this cheesy horror-esque flick.  Written by famous screenwriter Diablo Cody, Jennifer's Body tells the story of two best friends-- super-gorgeous/popular/sociopathic Jennifer and nerdy Needy (pun intended, much?).  When a vicious man-eating demon inhabits Jennifer's body, she becomes a man-eater-- literally.  She keeps going after all of Needy's favorite dudes, proving that mean girls still existant in the demonic world.  Needy, however, isn't going to take much more of it....

P.S.S. While the name of the demon is never mentioned, it is highly suspected to be a succubus, a demon that apparently seduced and destroyed men.  Fitting, eh?

"Battle Royale" (2000)

Today's Horror du Jour comes courtesy from Happy and Wrong, my other blog that focuses on life, fashion, and everything else.  It also has a Terror Tuesday section dedicated to horror movies.  Check out my post on Battle Royale, a terrific thriller from Japan that explores the downside of reality TV.  It actually predicted the rise of reality TV before it actually occurred.  Creepy, huh?

"Red Riding Hood" (2011)

Okay, so apparently I've been on a pretty heavy werwolf kick as of late.  Frankly, though, they are the most underrated horror movie monster-- we see vampires being cool and sophisticated, zombies being disgusting and in drones... poor werewolves!  What do they get?  Well, in Red Riding Hood, which is a retelling of the classic fairy tale, a vicious werwolf begins to attack the villagers, violating a treaty made long ago where they give them plenty of fresh meat in exchange for not being killed.  For some reason, it has targeted Amanda Seyfried, and she runs around in her red cape trying to figure out who the werewolf is and what it really wants....

P.S. Apparently, Taylor Lautner was considered for the role of one of Amanda Seyfried's suitors.  Thank goodness that didn't pan out (no offense, Taylor-- your abs are great but your acting is pretty weak)....

"Inside" (2007)

"Ichi the Killer" (2001)

Technically, Ichi the Killer is not a horror movie.  Instead of dealing with ghosts, demons, or the occasional axe-wielding maniac, director Takashi Miike (one of my favorite all-time directors, by the way) weaves together a story dealing with the Yakuza (i.e. Japanese mobsters), sadomasochism, and ultra-violence.  The premise is too complex to go into completely, but when a Yakuza boss goes missing, the rest of his mob goes looking for him.  Unfortunately for them, a young, psychotic, murderous Ichi is under the thumb of a retired cop bent on revenge.  I bet you can guess what happens next....

P.S. The name Ichi technically means "one."  The character of Ichi wears a yellow number 1 on his clothing throughout the entire movie due to this.

P.S.S. Director Takashi Miike had barf bags handed out as a gimmick during its premiere.... watch this movie and you'll understand why!

Trick 'r Treat (2007)

We are halfway through September, folks-- you know what that means, right?  Halloween is coming up soon!  While there is no doubt that All Hallow's Eve is famously delightful for yummy candy and funny costumes, I love it for its collection of scary movies.  Trick 'r Treat is one such example of a film set during the October month.  It shows four stories that are interwoven together, each chronicling some creepy aspect of Halloween.  Whether it's werewolves, ghosts, or serial killers, this movie shows how each one has its special place during that night.

P.S. Since most of the filming took place at night, children could not work certain hours.  Therefore, tons of little people had to dress up in costumes to take their place.

"Chainsaw Sally" (2001)

Sometimes you just watch a movie where every aspect stays with you for eternity; other times, you watch a flick that you can only remember parts of, like Chainsaw Sally.  Frankly, I rented this low-budget flick because of its creative, catchy title, and was expecting nothing else than a good laugh or jump.  However, for being so low-budget, it is a surprisingly campy, intriguing film that is easy to watch.  It deals with Sally, a librarian by day but a chainsaw-wielding serial killer by night.  Living with her transvestite brother in their murdered parents' home, they take extreme measures to protect their land.  Let's just say that chainsaw becomes pretty handy....

P.S. The star of this film, April Monique Burril, is not only the wife of the director, but was also pregnant during filming.  Tossing around a chainsaw in fishnet stockings while expecting?  That's what I call dedication!

"Piranha" (2010)

Okay, folks, I'm not going to insult your intelligence: Piranha, as far as movies go, is bad.  Very, very bad. Sure, it has a cast of B+ actors, like Elisabeth Shue and Christopher Lloyd, but the lack of story, cheesy animation-graphics, and pathetic acting makes it one truly unfortunate piece of film.  Why am I posting on this movie, you may ask, if I think it's so terrible?  Exactly that reason, folks-- it's so bad, it's hilarious!  A remake of the original Piranha (1978) (which I just added to my Netflix que, FYI), the movie centers around a Spring Break-esque party on a river where an underwater tremor releases tons of piranhas into the teen-infested waters.  There is blood, nudity, and plenty of cheesy dialogue-- it can definitely be worse, right?

P.S. Alexandre Aja, the director of this film, has gained notoriety for remaking classic horror movies.  Besides Piranha, he also directed The Hills Have Eyes (2006) and Mirrors (2008).  Is it just me or does he need to go back to directing better movies, like High Tension (2003)?

"(rec)" (2007)
